The Opportunity
Warren Buffett said he ‘was privileged to work during a period when it was only necessary to compete against half of the population’.
- Studies consistently show that companies with a high number of female directors and managers exhibit outperformance.
- Greater ‘Gender Diversity’ can reduce the risk inherent in ‘group-think’ and the male tendency towards excessive risk-taking.
- Women are substantially under-represented at boardroom and management level.
Naissance Capital believes that we can earn higher returns, and fulfil an important social objective, by investing in companies demonstrating ‘best practices’ with regard to Gender Diversity.
We will act as both a ‘beacon’ and a ‘siren’ by investing in firms which understand the need for greater female representation, and taking an activist stance against those which do not. In this way, we hope to make a real contribution towards advancing
opportunities for women in the workplace.
The Evidence
- McKinsey examined 89 top European companies and found ROE and stock price growth were higher in firms employing aboveaverage numbers of female directors and managers.
- Catalyst found the top quarter of Fortune-500 companies with positive gender diversity outperformed those in the bottom quarter with a 53% higher return on equity.
- Naissance Capital and Heidrick & Struggles (in conjunction with the University of Zurich) found that Gender Diversity is the most influential determinant of higher ROA among Corporate Governance related factors.
